Roasted Red Pepper Chicken Cavatelli
Cavatelli. What a word, right? I don't know why, but it makes me think of a super speedy sexy Italian car. And the driver probably has a pencil line mustache, a dangling cigarette from his lips and taupe linen pants to match the sand of the Mediterranean coast he so suavely cruises at sunset with his super hot lady friend in a slinky red dress. But it's not a car. And there's no pencil line mustache. There are no taupe linen pants. No cigaret... Read More
Easy Pasta Puttanesca
The first time I tried making pasta puttanesca was a tragedy. I’d bought a big ol’ can of puttanesca sauce from the grocery store, warmed it up, put it over my spaghetti and…well, it was underwhelming. Still, I knew there was something fishy about this sauce. Fishy in a good way. Fishy in a way that made me curious to see just how easy it would be to make from scratch. And oh, by gosh, by golly, it is easy indeed. This recipe for homema... Read More

Tiramisu Ice Cream Cake
Tiramisu was the first dessert I ever got at a restaurant. I was on one of the first dates with my college sweetheart and she asked to see the dessert menu. It was kind of odd to me because I had never done that before, and also because I had just eaten a crazy amount of cannelloni and couldn’t imagine eating anything else. She wanted the tiramisu and said we would split it. I of course obliged, having heard of the dessert, but not knowing... Read More
Gnocchi Gobi
My favorite Indian dish is Aloo Gobi, which literally translates to potato (aloo) and cauliflower (gobi). Since gnocchi is mostly potato, I thought it might be fun to swap out the potatoes in this dish for some of the succulent little potato dumplings. The switch really lightened up this heavy dish that is often laden with dense potatoes. Aloo Gobi has enough of a sauce that there was no reason to really change any other aspect of this dish.... Lemony Garden Vegetable Risotto
Remember the scene in Amélie when she's on the search for Dominique Bredoteau and the old French brittle man in her building stops her in the hallway and says, "Bretodeau. Not Bredoteau." And she'd had it wrong the entire time? Well, every time I make risotto I say out loud to myself, "RISOTEAU" like he does in the movie. Wasn't that just the most wonderful story you've ever heard? Okay so risotto. My garden continues to birth tomatoes an... Read More

Rainbow Cucidati Cookies
Okay, so I’m not Italian by any means but Italian food speaks to me. I feel like somewhere down my lineage there HAS to be some Italian in me. Why else would it feel like I have family in the kitchen when pasta, tiramisu, and pizza are present? We are all familiar with the classic Italian foods but these Rainbow Cucidati are hidden treasures in Italian cuisine. To be honest, I had never heard of them; when I did a quick Google search I foun... Read More
Heirloom Twist: Fire Roasted Italian Sausage Lasagna
We challenged Tablespoon bloggers to choose a classic recipe from the "Heirloom Recipes and New Twist" section of the brand new Betty Crocker Cookbook and throw down their own spin to share with you. Today's twist: Fire Roasted Italian Sausage Lasagna, Macheesmo's version of Betty's classic Italian Sausage Lasagna. As a kid, what I knew as lasagna was exactly the Betty Crocker lasagna recipe. I didn’t even realize there were other... Read More
Wheat Berry Risotto
You may not know this, but risotto is actually a process – not an ingredient. A lot of people think that risotto is the rice used for making risotto. But just like you can use different tortillas or fillings to make a quesadilla, you can use a wide range of grains to make risotto! Instead of rice, this Wheat Berry Risotto recipe uses a rarely used grain: whole-wheat berries. There are advantages and disadvantages to making risotto with whea... Read More
