Brace yourselves, because these Rainbow Peppermint Patties are going to knock your socks off!

Peppermint patties are one of those mystical treats. I never really understood what they were actually made out of—only that I loved eating them. The idea of making them on my own seemed overwhelming and difficult, but actually seeing what went into them made me feel like I could do it.

Then I got a little overly confident and had a harebrained idea of trying to make them rainbow striped inside. What??!! Yes, you can do it. And you’ll blow minds!

Patty dough

Start off by making the dough and dividing it evenly into six balls.

Colored balls

Next, color each ball one of the colors of the rainbow. I found that Betty Crocker’s gel food coloring works well here; it’s neater and doesn’t add as much additional liquid to our dough. I tried mixing the dough with my hands but using a bowl with a spoon was faster and less messy.

Laid out snake

Roll each ball in between two sheets of parchment paper. Since we’re trying to create a uniform rectangle with all of the colors, it helps to first roll the dough into a snake first and go from there.

Rolled snake

I rolled each into about an 11″ by 5″ rectangle.

Dough layers

After you’ve chilled each of the layers, stack them together and give them a gentle roll with the rolling pin to get rid of any air. I trimmed off the edge that I was going to use to start rolling so I had an even start.

Rolling snake

Begin rolling with the long edge, using the parchment paper to ease it along.

Rainbow pinwheel

Once it’s chilled you have a beautiful rainbow colored pinwheel!

Sliced pinwheel

Slice the pinwheel into 1/4 inch slices for dipping.

Dipping chocolate

Using a fork, dip each pinwheel in melted dipping chocolate. Work fast so that your pinwheels don’t start getting soft.

Dipped pinwheels

Place the dipped pinwheels on parchment or wax paper and then let them set up in the fridge or freezer.

Rainbow center

These gorgeous Rainbow Peppermint Patties are great to give to your friends and family. They’ll be wowed—look how amazing the inside looks! I still can’t believe I made these.

@Anon,

Like kenshappywife said, it sounds like you had too much sugar. You could add a little water if you want more of a dough consistency. Mine was pretty wet so I’m not sure why it was dry for you. Definitely need to really work in the colors. Like I said, I like the Betty Crocker gel colors. If they didn’t roll out easily you need more water for sure…Sorry!

It’s disappointing when a recipe that you’re psyched to try doesn’t turn out. But I don’t think you can call this the “worst recipe ever.” I haven’t made the recipe yet, but from your description, you added too much powdered sugar. It’s super easy to get too much powdered sugar because it packs so easily. Also, when looking at the recipe, I noticed one of the comments from 12/9, but of course you may have gotten the recipe before then and not tried it until the 20th. It said, “EXCELLENT! Made these earlier! Only tip is that you really need to knead the dough to get it to dough like consistency :) May seem dry at first, but once you start working it, it comes together.” Sorry to hear that your disaster was a disaster… Better luck next time!

Worst recipe ever. Followed the directions exactly and the dough, firstly, would not dye correctly. Did not hold the dye whatsoever and ended up not solidly colored, but more of a tye-dye consistency. Secondly, when the balls were completely even and rolled out they did not roll out easily and to the full size the recipe suggests. Thirdly, the dough wouldn’t even remotely roll into the snake shape….it crumbled. Fourthly, when removed from the fridge the dough refused to come off the parchment paper and completely crumbled even after being put in the fridge again. I had to throw an entire hour’s worth of work and money for the ingredients away. The entire disaster was an absolute disaster.

This would be so pretty for the holidays using just red/green/white. It might be kind of cool to twist red and white into a rope, make a little cane and dip in chocolate; obviously not a peppermint patty but still I bet it would be cute.

This is NOT a bread or cookie dough, it is a CANDY dough. It uses powdered sugar instead of flour. The full recipe is available by clicking on the “Get the Recipe” in the picture of a recipe card.

Hi @Mayfield963 – It’s not dough in the bread sense. This uses a sweet patty “dough.”
